INTRODUCTION
The importance of materials in the evolution of human civilization and technology
is inescapable as exemplified by the Stone Age, Iron Age, Bronze Age, and
to the dawning ages of supercomputers, electronic gadgetry, aerospace adventures
and the marvels of nano and bio technologies. Inevitably, developments in
materials and/or materials engineering have provided the nucleus for symbiotic
developments in other engineering fields as witnessed in the past and at present,
and undoubtedly in the future. This awareness as to the complementary nature
of all engineering disciplines evokes the theme for this conference, viz.
"Materials Engineering: Leading the Path Towards the Future".
This 1st AUN-Seed/Net Regional Conference on Materials (RCM 2009) is organized
to provide a platform for the exchange of information, experience and discussion
on materials engineering research and education, and its role in the other
engineering disciplines. This regional conference would involve active participation
of regional scientists, researchers, engineers and academicians (from ASEAN
and Japan) interested in materials. The scope of the conference includes research
and industrial studies (fundamental/applied) on all advanced materials, including
advanced polymers, biomaterials, composites, photonic & optical materials,
electronic & semiconducting materials, materials for energy, green materials,
nanomaterials, porous materials and smart materials.
This conference is jointly organized by the School of Materials and Mineral
Resources Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia and AUN/SEED-Net, Japan.
The Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (SEED-Net) Project,
was officially established as an autonomous sub-network of the ASEAN University
Network (AUN) in April 2001 (AUN/SEED-Net) and was aimed at promoting human
resources development in engineering within ASEAN. The School of Materials
and Mineral Resources Engineering, USM, has been selected as the Host Institution
spearheading Materials Engineering in ASEAN, befitting the Apex university
status accorded to Universiti Sains Malaysia.
OBJECTIVES
* To provide a platform for sharing and discussion of knowledge in cutting-edge
technologies at regional level amongst researchers, academicians, engineers
and industry players in materials and other engineering disciplines.
* To enhance the development of materials engineering education and networking
amongst participants from the ASEAN region and Japan, as well as amongst young
academics from the burgeoning Malaysian universities.
* To facilitate the bridging of knowledge in research and industry amongst
the participants from diverse background, expertise and nationalities to fully
realise the transformation of a truly ASEAN techno-community.
